“I taste your freedom, though I’m never free…” – lyrics from Cosmic Light by Thandi Ntuli
Thandi Ntuli is a South African jazz pianist, vocalist and producer. She debuted her first album The Offering in 2014.
I first heard Thandi Ntuli’s song Cosmic Light while watching an episode of Spike Lee’s Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It.
Since I habitually focus on lyrics and how they often connect to life experiences, I was instantly drawn into this song. From there, I downloaded both of Ntuli’s albums, which I still enjoy listening often.
Ntuli’s music is peaceful, yet emotional. It prompts meditation and reflection of African ancestry throughout its jazz style.
Exiled is Ntuli’s current album. She once described this album as “risky and experimental”. That’s no lie. It’s jazz fusion with sensuality.
My most favorite tracks are: Exiled, Cosmic Light, What’s Left?, It’s Complicated pt. 1+2 and Freefall.
